Cultural Activation: Expanding the Concept of Health Literacy and Consumer Activism.
鈥淐ultural Activation鈥 is a type of consumer health activation that affirms personal cultural views on health and supports the need for these views to be incorporated into all aspects of health care. This session will define 鈥渃ultural activation,鈥 present tools to help consumers engage in culturally-oriented discussions with providers, and offer a peer perspective on the strengths and challenges of this approach.

Controlling costs and achieving health care quality improvements require the participation of activated and informed consumers. Dr. Hibbard will describe a process for conceptualizing and operationalizing what it means to be 鈥渁ctivated鈥 and delineate the process used to develop a measure for assessing activation.
Presenter:听 Judith Hibbard, Dr.PH, Senior Researcher and Emeritus Professor, University of Oregon.
Dr. Hibbard has focused her research on consumer choices and behavior in health care with a particular interest in approaches that give consumers knowledge and control over their health and health care. Dr. Hibbard is the lead author of the 鈥淧atient Activation Measure鈥, used worldwide by researchers and practitioners to measure an individual’s knowledge and skill for self-management.
