It may also be a resource for policy makers as they are determining how to include cultural competence into service paradigms and outcome models.

SAMHSA Announces

New TIP on Cultural CompetenceCover of TIP 59, Improving Cultural Competence

Treatment Improvement Protocol (TIP) 59, Improving Cultural Competence, helps behavioral health professionals understand the role of culture in the delivery of behavioral health services. The TIP uses a multidimensional model for developing cultural competence and takes into account the different organizational levels of treatment. The chapters focus on specific racial, ethnic, and cultural considerations along with the core elements of cultural competence, which include cultural awareness, general cultural knowledge, cultural knowledge of behavioral health, and cultural skill development.
