Note: Open Minds’ Monica Oss is one of the nation’s most respected and sought after leadership experts and organizational consultants by our behavioral health community. In the piece below, she emphasizes that “an organization can never rise above its leader”, a leader who hopefully has “great transformational skills, a passion for the coming change, and the energy to learn and develop new competencies.” Monica asks “Is your CEO (or program or department leader) ready for the coming shifts in the environment?”
At two April 25th sessions at Annual Albany Executive Seminar, Monica will be on hand to help leaders prepare for the extraordinary changes and demands we all face today. She has also been invited to join many session leaders to host a ‘Lunch ‘n Learn’ table that day.
The Seminar is only 2 and a half weeks away! See program and registration materials at !

I had an interesting discussion this week. A foundation is looking at investing dollars for technical assistance and management into local community-based provider organizations, to ready those organizations for health care reform and changes to Medicaid in their state. The foundation director’s questions to me – How do we know which organizations to select? Which of them will actually change and put the consultation recommendations in place?
Selecting the right organizations is not an easy task, but there is a very straightforward answer. Whether an organization (or a program, or a department) will change is completely dependent on its leadership. You can have the best strategic plan, the best EHR, the best clinical outcomes – but if the organization’s leadership doesn’t embrace the change, it won’t happen. To dig up a very old Malcolm Forbes quote from my early days as a manager, “An organization can never rise above its leader.”
So, the straightforward answer to my colleague’s question? The organizations to invest in are those with a CEO that has great transformational skills, a passion for the coming change, and the energy to learn and develop new competencies.
Is your CEO (or program or department leader) ready for the coming shifts in the environment? To answer that question, I thought I would share the best of our archive on transformational leadership and change management. Take a look and make your own call.
