Disability Rights Treaty Needs Your Help!

听The Senate Foreign Relations Committee will meet to discuss the Treaty on Thursday, July 26th, 2012.听 There is a good chance the Treaty will be ratified if it can get out of Committee.

The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) is a Treaty adopted by the United Nations to protect and advance the human rights of person with disabilities.听 This Treaty presents a historic opportunity for the United States to join this important world-wide effort.听听 However, the Treaty first must be ratified (approved) by the Senate. 听

听

Special interest groups have recently succeeded in delaying ratification.听 They are also trying to add conditions (called RUDs) to the Treaty in ways that would make it almost meaningless. 听

听

This Treaty needs your help! Here’s what you can do:

The most important Senators to contact are listed below.听 If your Senator is listed, please call or email them.听 If you have time, contact other Senators too.听听

听

Here’s an example of what you might say:

听
“I am a person with a disability.听 I personally know many people with disabilities.听 I support ratification of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, and so do my friends and others in our community.听 Please support the Treaty in the Committee meeting on July 26th.听 Vote in favor of the Treaty without any new RUDs.听 We would like to have the treaty ratified by the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act at the end of July.”
